saw it. There's also http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=31359&start=0 and as we see, the error is pretty unspecific...
-> a version=1.8.1 file cannot be handled

(Debian has a conflicts libhsqldb-java >= 1.8.1~ because of this and
configure will also reject 1.8.1 for that reason)
