...the old idea of having some sort of convenience wrapper around the 
basic API.  Sure, can be done.  However, there is that other school of 
thought that suggests that if your basic API is well designed, there is 
no room for such a convenience wrapper, as the basic API should be 
neither more complicated nor more simplistic than necessary.
