My hope was to keep it in sync with how the API is used in reality, and 
I thought that sooner we did it the better.

Ok. Then I'm fine with not cherry-picking this to 4.0.  It won't change 
anything anyway in practice, and if avoiding the announcement is 
important (or keeping the list of API CHANGES small) then I'll be fine 
with it.

Ah!  Well, if it's just adding the -x option to that command is all it 
takes then I'm fine with it, and I'll start doing it in my next 
cherry-pick.  I wrongly assumed that this had to be inserted manually, 
which would've taken lots of extra effort.
