To be fair, many if not most bugs or unimplemented a11y features stem
from 3.x or older releases or were introduced with the integration of
the IAccessible2 work, but may have been discovered just later.

In fact 32 open bugs and 46 resolved bugs. So they are not ignored.

Might be an idea, though too late for this year's GSoC.
Finding expertise about accessibility among students might also not be
too promising.

Rather than that, more continuous awareness of developers of a11y needs
and ongoing work would be welcomed.
