ESC meeting minutes: 2025-07-17

Miklos Vajna vmiklos at collabora.com
Thu Jul 17 14:39:06 UTC 2025

* Present:
   + Ilmari, Caolan, Cloph, Jonathan, Michael W, Olivier, Stephan, Rohit, Regina, Miklos

* Completed Action Items:
   + Shardul Vikram Singh commit bit for the slideshow primitives gsoc project (Cloph)
   + Linux baseline update to RHEL9: ping Rene re Debian (Michael W)
     + discussed with Rene and Rico (Debian + Ubuntu maintainers)
       + no objections in general
       + would be good if it still worked on Ubuntu 22.04, Debian stable
       + relevant libs seem recent enough on Debian/Ubuntu as compared to AlmaLinux 9
         + except for gtk4 and qt6
       + did a test with AlmaLinux 9 build on Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04, Debian stable (12)
         + gen, gtk3 and kf5 work everywhere
         + SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk4 worked in a quick test on Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04, but crashed on Debian stable
         + SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=qt6 -> not used anywhere, fallback to default VCL plugin worked fine
     + suggestion:
       + bump baseline to AlmaLinux 9, enable gtk4 and qt6 at least in CI and bibisect builds
       + presumably also enable qt6 in daily/release builds (not used by default)
       + enable or disable gtk4 for daily/release builds (but not used by default anywhere anyway)?
       -> sounds like it's safe to bump the baseline to AlmaLinux 9 on master (Michael W)

* Pending Action Items:
   + QA stats: bibisect duplication removal from the script (Xisco)

* Release Engineering update (Cloph)
   + 25.2.5 release this week: announced as final earlier today
   + 25.8.0 rc2 in 1 week
     + then libreoffice-25-8-0 branch creation
   + 26.2
     + Windows build baseline update later in the summer
       + looking into this, will probably happen later in the month (Cloph)
       + plan: no cygwin, wsl-as-helper style of build
       + new baseline to be used also for the 25.8 builds?
         + will so, depends also on the performance
         + life is simpler if the baseline can be shared
         + similar for Linux, but there it's easier because it needs no dedicated HW, like with Windows
     + 32bit Windows builds to drop? (Cloph)
       + 1.5 million downloads / 3-4% percent of the downloads
       + not sure how many of those are accidental (i.e. how many could run 64bit) (Ilmari)
       + already deprecated -> next step is to hide it from download page (Cloph)
         + suggest to do the download page tweaking now, was already planned for 25.8
       + Cloph will do this for the download page for 26.2
     + Linux build baseline update to AlmaLinux 9? (Michael W)

* Documentation (Olivier)
     + Helpcontents
        + updates and fixes (ohallot)
     + Guides
        + Work in progress.
