It's been 2 months since I've put this forward. In this time we could
have merged it resolving a massive hack we had for years.
Plus as pointed out I'm happy to help with the future work, but
blocking on that and sitting is rather alienating :-(

If future work has not landed yet, I would suggest we merge this.
