gobi 3000 mc8355 error: couldn't set FCC auth

is this still the case or is there a way to do this with mbim now? I'm
under the impression that the gobi 3000/mc8355 needs to stay in mbim
mode to use. Is there firmware i'm supposed to find and load? I saw
libqmi-qmi-over-mbim in aur but it says

how is one supposed to set fcc auth now, i wonder? i tried to do a scan
in modemmanagergui (just to see what might be revealed) and it tried to
turn the modem on and failed repeatedly. So i guess the modem is asleep?
Also, please let me know if i need to provide any additional info or if
posting on libmbim would be more appropriate.
