The many
[   17.961632] composite sync not supported
messages might be a part of the problem as they correspond to the
[    18.479] (II) NOUVEAU(0): DDCModeFromDetailedTiming: 1440x900 Warning: We
only handle separate sync.
Xorg.0.log warnings.

The dmesg would be more useful if you added “drm.debug=0x04” to the kernel
command line; that turns on KMS debug messages, and since this is (at least) a
modesetting problem they're likely to be useful.

You say that the nvidia binary driver *kind of* works?  Is this one of the
laptops where the nvidia driver doesn't work properly?
