One thing I did notice that I forgot to mention:

This morning, while the computer was locked up, I tried Ctrl+Alt+Delete, RESIUB
then the ACPI power off and then tried to SSH into the box.

The computer turned off after several minutes which seems to indicate that the
ACPI power off worked, albeit very slowly (and without updating the screen).
