Immediate thought -- is there a way to 'catch' the driver before things freeze
up, so that the table method can be used instead, specifically only as a
fallback...?

I also gather that you'll be on a trip or vacation or similar in February. If
that's the case -- by all means ignore me till you get back and enjoy yourself
while you're away. R&R is important.
