This is my personal view, but since late '90s, pretty much all display
detection is done automatically, at least in Windows.
I am in the camp of people who think that xorg (X Window server) should be
easier to use like Windows, hence, more and more of the hardware configuration
job should be done automatically.
This is why I started to work on weaning off the use of a predefined table for
the display output.
I am sure there are people who do not like this view, but if one wants to see
more mass market adoption of Linux (or BSD), everything should be more
automatic.
In this sense, I am not a huge fan of having manual-based hardware
configuration methods.
That being said, if I can eventually, I will like to do away with VBE (VESA
BIOS Extension) support since it does not work well with 64-bit OSes.

Actually, I am traveling right now.
This is why I only have one device that I can use for OpenChrome testing, and
it is my Epic 1314 laptop.
I brought it for the current multi-week trip specifically to work on OpenChrome
development.
Back at where I live, I do have access to many more VIA Technologies integrated
graphics-based computers, but for now, I only have one computer for testing
purposes.
I do have other activities in life, hence, I expect to reduce the time I spend
on OpenChrome starting around late January until late spring.
I am starting to read the code that handles DFP recognition for VX800 and later
chipsets.
Hopefully, I can make a patch for you to test in a few weeks.
I am also trying to obtain Git repository access so that the code base can be
updated more frequently.

Regards,

Kevin Brace
