Yeah don't know if it's simply a limitation of the NTSC circuitry in the 
vt1622 to display the unscaled image or if its possible to generate timing 
that works. I tried various sync tweaks but without easier to modify TV 
modelines it's hard to get any further. Suffice to say simply moving the sync 
about, widening the hsync pulse, moving the vsync pulse down and so on did 
not solve the problem. However I'm trying to make the tv mode code more 
flexible at the moment, so that will enable much more experimentation.
