Okay, that was pretty thorough. Together with the post by Mark
Zimmerman, this begins to look like a timing problem on the board
itself. Or at least some interaction between X or drm and the
board. If it also happened with vesa, it's unlikely to be a driver
problem, vesa or openchrome.

Have you tried the combination DRI enabled, and DMA on the drive
disabled? If the hangs don't happen then, it's almost certain that
the fault lies in the drm.
