Also, a couple of photos taken with a digital camera, the first showing
the test card, the second playing a reasonably high quality avi in mplayer:

Needless to say, the camera does not do such a good job of photographing
the TV :)

You are right, I've commented out the ModeLines from xorg.conf and it
does not effect the tv display.
I'm not sure which bit you mean, so I've attached my log file, gzipped.
Some other details:
gentoo linux
2.6.17.6 vanilla kernel
latest DRM from cvs
Xorg 7.1.1
When I get a chance, I'll try your patch instead of mine and see what
happens.
