I would be interested too. I installed xgl, compiz, Mesa from cvs using gentoo
ebuilds. Via dri is cvs snapshot of 2006-12-23. Latest openchrome drivers
from svn. However when I start Xgl, I get following lines (basically "No
screens found"):

X Window System Version 7.0.0
Release Date: 21 December 2005
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.0
Build Operating System:Linux 2.6.14-gentoo-r2 i686
Current Operating System: Linux localhost 2.6.14-gentoo-r2 #4 Sun Jan 8

Build Date: 11 January 2006
        Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.

I use Xgl with the same configuration with which normal Xorg 7.0 starts and
works without problems. The command line is Xgl -ac -accel glx:pbuffer
xv:pbuffer and various combinations (tried also just plain "Xgl"). Any ideas?
