I also use Gentoo and use drm and dri from a vanilla kernel (2.6.14)
and everything works fine. I emerged libdrm, enabled DRM and Via DRM
as modules in the kernel and emerged xorg-x11 7.0-r1 with
xf86-video-via as video driver. To keep the driver up to date I check
out the openchrome svn repository once in a while and compile the
sources with prefix=/usr to override the old driver and libxvmc. Even
if I get errors I can remerge xf86-video-via and libXvMC and get back
to a stable system.

So drm should also work with a standard kernel, imho no cvs or
bleeding edge versions are needed.
