Comment:

 You were exactly right.  I rebuilt xine after hacking the ebuild to not
 directly link to Via's XvMC and instead to the wrapper, and it worked.  I
 had [stupidly/blindly] assumed the ebuild would correctly auto-detect to
 use the wrapper if I removed the xorg via module, obviously I was wrong.
 After actually making sure the wrapper was being linked to during
 configure, Xine started working as it does for everyone else on the
 planet, correctly.

 Thank you, and hopefully someone else with Gentoo and blind faith will
 read this and it will help them.
