I don't really understand: You write you cannot start X using the via 
driver (openchrome?) and use vesa instead. Your xorg.conf shows, you are 
actually using a via driver. If your TV properly shows the boot sequence 
your BIOS seems to be set ok to PAL, so using the correct mode should 
set you up just fine. I also strongly suggest using a noscale mode.
