Look for the line "(WW) VIA(0): Using VBE to set modes to work 
around this."  in your Xorg.0.log.  Some twenty lines below that it 
starts to look at the Vesa Bios Extension, getting a very verbose 
list of modes from it.

As the line quoted above says, the via driver uses the VBE modes 
because it doesn't itself implement modesetting for LCD panels yet.
