 Your feeling was right : I'm using VGA. I forced the driver to use only
 the VGA output ... and actually that did work.

 With the line Option "ActiveDevice?" "CRT" added to the device section, I
 can have the appropriate dimensions.

 This should greatly help find out what went wrong
