 Note that the Ubuntu login screen is similarly split, but at full scree
 resolution - 1024x768. (An exception is before the Monitors menu was
 evoked to reduce the res. to 1024x768 the first time Ubuntu is started -
 in that case, the login dialog appears offset towards the lower-right
 corner of the screen).

 Also, if I use the 2.6.31-20-generic kernel from Ubuntu Karmic 9.10, the
 screen appears normally (assuming the screen has previously been set to
 1024x768 or lower). So I suspect that possibly the frame buffer, or some
 Ubuntu component that the Karmic kernel doesn't load, is involved. See
 notes > 100 in the Launchpad bug report.
