Please provide the X logs (/var/log/Xorg.0.log), the reason why it
doesn't start is probably in there.

I'm sorry, but I'll not be trying to debug VIA's driver, there is enough
on our plate with openchrome. Good if VIA's driver more or less work for
you, but the way VIA is developing their driver is unsustainable. They
regularly remove support for "old" chipsets, their DRM tree is not
following Linus's tree and gets outdated very quickly, the 3D driver is
only provided as a binary for very few distros, etc...

Usually, all you need to look at are X logs (/var/log/messages) and
kernel logs (/var/log/messages).
