Copyright placeholder is an issue or feature of OFL. For example GNU GPL has not 
such the placeholder, it suppose to place copyrights elsewhere. From OFL-FAQ I 
can understand that it is recommended to place copyrights and acknowledgements 
in FONTLOG. So the history of the font can be described there. Unfortunately 
OFL-FAQ do not describe clearly such the situation.

By the way the X11 license does not restrict the distribution of modified 
versions or derivative works.
