BTW when DejaVu Arabic was done it was limited by the lack of any support for
opentype BASE in font libs. So it was not possible to create a font with
different metrics for Latin and Arabic. Lately Behdad has indicated he would
add BASE to pango if he had a floss font to test with. (but DejaVu maintainers
lost the drive to do it in the meanwhile). So if you're feeling adventurous
(hint hint)
