As a point of interest, HDMI (DVI derivative) is capable of supporting
8, 10, or 12 bits per channel for YCbCr. This means that hardware
will surely be available to support it, and it is likely to spill back
over to support RGB (if not already). Ultimately, it may be
cheaper/easier to put smarts in the video card than in the display.

I found some HDMI test equipment
(http://www.quantumdata.com/products/stand_alone/802BT_detail.asp)
which supports 12 bits per channel HDMI.
