This might easily be misunderstood, so let me add a sentence or two.

The color management functionality that we are adding for GIMP 2.4
will be using lcms and it is likely to be the only implementation that
will be available for the foreseeable future. Still the framework is
designed in a way that makes it possible to exchange the plug-ins and
modules involved and implement the same functionality based on a
different color management library.
