the strengths of Gutenprint is that you can use it in a more general
way than with the OEM driver (or "virtual device").  One person was at
least trying to use it to drive a printer to "print" chemicals in
precisely defined locations.  Since Gutenprint offers a predithered
mode (assumes that the input is already dithered), he could do so.
