They do, but certainly not for color management reasons, but in order to
save bandwidth (for instance using the BGR233 8-bit "true color" format
with 2 bits blue, 3 bits green, and 3 bits red), or in order to convert
between different color depths or between indexed and true color modes
on the source and the destination display.
