Actually I feel that the sooner we have students working with us the better
even at this early stage of the process. Both students last year started
communicating with us, one using this email list and the other in private
emails to me, before the GSoC process started. And the year before one of our
students was in contact with me very early in the process (before OpenICC had
been selected but after we had applied). I think this is one of the reasons
that we have been so successful with our projects over the last two years.
Also the proposals that we get from students who start early are of much
higher quality in most cases and the extra time results in a better working
relationship with the student IMO. Doing these projects requires a
significant commitment from both the mentors and the students to be successful
and the sooner this starts the better.
Kai-Uwe took part in the Open Printing meeting on Monday and Till suggested
that we should also include CM related projects in their list of possible
projects just in case OpenICC is not selected again. This is a good idea and
it could result in additional CM projects on our plate even if some of them
are technically Open Printing projects.
