I didn't request /var/share -- only /var/lib...
The directory "color" would be a non FHS extension to /var/lib which
/could/ be easily standardized in future versions of the FHS spec[1].

I have. Their logic was that /usr is mounted read only, /srv is site
specific (not machine specific). This only leaves /var/lib which is,
in general, machine-specific non-architecture-dependent persistent
data which is pretty much exactly what we want.

[1] Although, the people I talked to didn't think it was important
enough to mention explicitly in the FHS...
