Merging of VCGT with the transform was thought of a feature. But I changed
my mind about that regarding the colour server.
Its better to teach users not to omit VCGT in monitor device profiles
for colour servers. On the other side, people who really want a
calibration, for whatever reason, have still the possibility to
use VCGT.

In my personal view they are rather obsolete. Lookup tables are precise
enough in CompICC. Running a cheap Apple laptop monitor with osX with
VCGT and Linux without, I never missed VCGT. On better hardware its even
lesser needed.
