Graeme,
 One of the purposes Gutenprint would like to externalize the driver
parameters is to allow domain experts to edit values which now need to
be tuned by the maintainers.
 XML editing with a text editor is easy.
 Why would it be preferable to have tags in a profile that contain
driver information, rather than have an XML file that contains an
embedded profile?
