In a perfect world, I'd like to see a file as the lowest common
denominator, since that would make it largely system independent.
It could be as simple as a configuration file, or as complex
as a database. You could then layer DBus on top of it
for those systems where it makes sense, but there would
then still be the option of different elements interacting at the
file level.
