[packagekit] app-install 0.1.0 released!

Just out of curiousity, 

On an Ubuntu system using packagekit and packagekit-gnome the setup looks something like,

backend-apt  -> packagekit -> packagekit-gnome.

Where does app-install fit in relevant to all this. Is it like a Software Sources or more for installing packages(gdebi) or perhaps even like dpkg?

Sorry im still trying to understand how package management fits together in Linux.
