Let's have another go at unblocking these patches. I'll probably be doing
some work on ARMv7 soon (Raspberry Pi has finally moved on from a 12-year-
old CPU design!) and I'd rather not keep diverging further and further
 from upstream.

I will shortly repost the first sub-group of patches, hopefully having
taken care of your concerns. Patch 3 takes the macro trick I used in the
(now removed) operator/format parser part of affine-bench.c and applies
it to the version from check-format.c/utils.c.

Hopefully these will be considered OK and I'll move on to the next group
of patches.
