Tests fail with syntax error on Solaris 9

Using pkg-config-0.19.

The glib-1.2.8 tests all passed but the tests in the "check" subdirectory
all fail.

SunOS marten.isi.edu 5.9 Generic_118558-10 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Blade-1000
Using gcc (GCC) 3.3.2.
