Thanks, I've commited this.

I do wonder how it interacts with the dithering that we already do for
gradients.

I guess it doesn't really matter either way, though, since this is for
corner cases.
Plymouth was designed to be used with kernel modesetting, which is
always a full 8 bits per channel.
