0.99.4 was not working without a separate patch iirc. Also there were several 
bugs reported against this release in.

The problem is, that the project plan was not documented. Also it was almost 
impossible to get patches included into an upstream release. It was not even 
known when there are plans to release a new one or where to get the tarball. 
This was a totally broken project for me, which does not mean that the code 
itself is totally broken. The project is also about handling patch 
submissions, bug reports and feature requests. Otherwise it does not make 
much sense to make a it an open source / community project.
