It really ought to save most¹ non-DCT as PNG.  As it already links
libjpeg, adding libpng as a dependency is not unreasonable.

1]  One might argue that CCITTFax-encoded images should be preserved
    and saved as CCITT-encoded tiff files.  At least as an option.
