[poppler] bug in poppler+

Oh, I remember the solution now, and it might have relevance to the list.

For FontForge, there was a configuration option for compiling, which would
use FontForge's own homegrown iconv solution (presumably for platforms
without true iconv support?)

I don't know if Poppler has, or would want to have, such an option, but
you could grep through the codebase to see if those functions exist.  I'm
guessing not.
