 I doubt this is particularly desirable for most people who want their
 mixing to work seemlessly, however, you could probably set a property on a
 stream and have some kind of "mutable sink" module that you set to be your
 default device. Normally it would just pass on the streams to your real
 sink but if any stream playing on that real sink has a certain property it
 would just drop the data. You would set this sink as your default sink and
 any "unmutable" stream you wanted to play you would just move directly to
 the real sink (this is different). You don't even need the property
 really, you can just say if there are *any* streams playing directly on
 that sink then mute myself!

 Just a (poorly described) suggestion as I'd imagine Lennart would want to
 keep code that would do this out of the main structure of pulse.
