Comment:

It is in no way equal to a graphical equaliser with one slider.

Surround sounds are handled by separate sliders but we merge that into one
in most GUIs but allow a split version where appropriate. It's still one
control with proper channel names, but it all makes sense. Why are there
Master & PCM controls. 99% of users don't care, they just fiddle with both
until something works. This is a total mess and it's broken. The PA
approach fixes things. Additionally, all of the high end amps I've owned
in my life use a db scale when changing volume.

If your volume is changing too much with a small change in a pavucontrol
slider then the db information exposed by your audio driver is buggy and
should be fixed. Please report this to ALSA devs. For me on my h/w the
slider is smooth and volume increments very nicely to my ears.

This report is not so much worded like a bug report but more of a
discussion. If you want to discuss things, please do so through the
appropriate channel (i.e. the mailing list) rather than through a bug
 tracking system.

I'll close this as elsewhere for now (as I suspect your problem is invalid
db info from your alsa drivers.
