 One update for anyone who might find this later.  HDSP *needs* tsched=0,
 which module-detect does not support, so I ended up with:

 load-module module-alsa-sink device_id=0 tsched=0
 load-module module-alsa-source device_id=0 tsched=0


 which plays acceptably
