Mint is based on Ubuntu right? If so, then you've probably inherited the same
retarded patch that Ubuntu shipped which broke the sound theme specifications
and thus broke the Test Speakers UIs.

If you have any contact with the Mint devs, please point out this stupid
problem so they can fix it!

As for the mic, have you tried settng the stereo input channels out of phase
(e.g. set one to e.g. 25% and one to 75%)? I've seen some mics that do this
weird out of phase thing and cancel themselves out.... stupid I know but worth
a shot.

Please also attach the output from "pacmd ls" to this bug.
