It's the thing you wrote inside the parentheses. I recall at least a
couple of times when a user has complained about some recording issue, and
he has mentioned that at least the vumeters of the mic are moving. That's
helpful for debugging, so it seems like a useful thing to have the
vumeters always show the mic signal.
