I watched top while running vlc through PA, and it became obvious that the
choppiness was due to thrashing the swap. What I need to do is to lower PA
memory usage. What's the most effective way of doing that?

FYI, this is on
vlc-0.9.8a-1.fc10.i386
kernel-2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686
pulseaudio-0.9.13-6.fc10.i386

I guess it may be time to upgrade the hardware, too.
