Well, I said KDE 4.6, so I kinda said Phonon, I guess :

Yep. I didn't want to go here or elsewhere with only such a hard tool
like Amarok at my hands showing that something's wrong. Thus I was VERY
happy to find out, that paplay also has problems.

'coz I've always done it like this ;) That's why.

It's new equipment - which of course does not mean, that it's not
broken ;)
Forgot to mention - I would NOT assume the headset to be broken. When
I pair it with my Nexus S Andrid mobile phone or with my OS X notebook
at home, playback is just fine.
