[pulseaudio-discuss] Playing audion on TV through HDMI cable with mplayer

The previous errors with pavucontrol occur when I ran it as a user.
If I run pavucontrol as root, it complains:

    Establishing connection to pulseaudio.  Please wait.

I waited for 15 minutes and no progress.  Also, this machine isn't
connected with the internet.
