I've cloned the git repo, applied your patch and tested it following the
procedure described in README (shown below). It seems that pauses
between successive runs of paplay gone, but they are still present when
sound is played by aplay (configured to use PulseAudio) and pacat. Here
is the procedure I used to run PulseAudio:

autoupdate
./autogen.sh
CFLAGS="-ggdb3 -O0" LDFLAGS="-ggdb3" ./configure
make
killall pulseaudio && sleep 1 && ./src/pulseaudio -n -F src/default.pa -p $(pwd)/src/.libs/
