Ian, 

     Thanks for the tips.

I tried a few of your ideas before I had a lightbulb... I unplugged my
GPS and then tried again and it started without a crash... Im now
attempting to track down the crash with GPS plugged in, using some of
your suggestions and in the context of a GPS related problem.

It may be related to the fact that I just grabbed compiled and
installed the latest gpsd cvs
